Why should you read it? Titania McGrath explains early on in the book:

To give a tangible example of our achievements, consider how the definition of the word 'Nazi' has been successfully broadened to include anyone who voted for Brexit, has ever considered supporting the Conservative Party or who refuses to take the Guardian seriously. Although this is a great victory for the progressive cause, it does mean that there are now more Nazis living in modern Britain than even existed in 1930s Germany. This makes Woke: A Guide to Social Justice not only timely but essential."

I began exploring the following theory in response to a number of comments on a recent post - and then (doh!) forgot to post it. So here it is, slightly rejigged:

They walk among us. They look like us and talk like us, and they give every impression of having our best interests at heart - but their goal is to destroy us. They've realised that the greatest weaknesses of those of us fortunate enough to live in Western democracies are a desire to feel good about ourselves and a longing to be thought well of by others. Armed with these insights, they've set about convincing us that what we know to be true is not only false, but wicked. By exploiting our good manners - our desire not to offend - and our addiction to feeling morally superior, they've gradually replaced (to paraphrase Thomas Sowell) what works with what sounds good.

Just in case you haven't yet read former Google software engineer James Damore's 10-page internal memo, entitled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber", a full PDF version can be found here. If you have ten minutes to spare, it's well worth reading. And if you do have the time to read it, I recommend the version I've link to because many left-liberal online pseudo-news sites have doctored it to suit their preferred narrative. It's clear, logical, well-argued, unemotional and rational - a tad too politically centrist for my taste, and I bridled at the references to climate science, but I agree with the general direction of travel...

I was making a cup of tea to take up to bed last night when I made the mistake of switching on the radio. BBC Radio Four. There was someone whose voice I vaguely recognised droning on about gender identity - or, specifically, his problems with gender identity during his teens. "Oh God, please shut up!" I groaned. As he evidently wasn't minded to, I switched the radio off and headed for bed, feeling vaguely depressed. I'm pretty sure the last time I switched the radio on in the early hours there was someone banging on about transgenderism. A quick check today on the BBC website revealed that the BBC's obsession with "gender fluidity" - which I wrote about last year and in 2015 - hasn't lessened in recent months: the great left-liberal propaganda juggernaut is actually picking up speed on this issue. Here are just a few transgender/gender fluidity/anti-cisnormative items from BBC programmes and news stories during the last three months:

I've just started following a Twitter feed called New Real Peer Review, which posts extracts from the sort of stunningly ridiculous twaddle currently being excreted by many American universities. Most of us never see this codswallop, because it's written in a strange, impenetrable language and it addresses non-issues and non-subjects which would strike most people - including, I suspect, most intellectuals - as the most appalling load of pretentious, meaningless balls. From what I've read, this drivel isn't meant to help anyone better understand our world or to increase our store of knowledge, but is rather an attempt to create an alternative cultural Marxist fantasy universe in which every traditional standard of scholarship, sense, taste and discrimination has been jettisoned in order to shape a bizarre narrative of victimhood, suffering and oppression which bears absolutely no relation whatsoever to reality. The protests started with the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who apparently wants to complain about racial inequality, which has evidently forced him and an enormous number of other black athletes to become unfeasibly rich and famous. I'm sure we all feel their pain and sympathise with how they've suffered under the jackboot of American racism.

British Muslims are not in danger of a white racist backlash - and many more black Americans are killed by blacks than by whites. Stop telling racist lies.

According to today's Daily Express item, the hate-preacher - who fought tooth and nail for eight long years to stay in the UK before finally being extradited to Jordan in 2013 - now feels that the West is simply too dangerous for Muslims. he told his 58,000 Twitter followers "Muslims living in the West will lose. Sedition and spread of bloodshed will devour them."
