Having spent the last few hours slumped in front of the TV, banjanxed by the unwonted heat, watching Sky News and the BBC News Channel, I came away even more convinced that the British really are a top-hole people. I'm sure this sounds glib, trite, sentimental, etc. - and it's not exactly difficult to feel sympathy for the victims of terrorist attacks, their families, and the people of the towns and cities where they tend to happen - but it's true. One of the very few heartening aspects of yet another mass slaughter by Muslim fanatics is that the aftermath affords us a glimpse of what people are really like...

Huge congratulations to Shakespeare-quoting Royal Marine Alexander Blackman on the news that he's about to be released

There was nothing - literally nothing - in the Alexander Blackman case to justify the grotesque 10-year sentence handed down to him by a British court for dispatching a Taliban fighter on the battlefield in Afghanistan. As far as I can see, the British government, its minions, and the Army indulged in a sordid vendetta to cover their own sorry arses. Some sort of sanction was evidently required - but a ten-year prison sentence? Ridiculous. Anyway, he'll be out in a couple of weeks, thanks to his splendid "lioness" wife, Claire, the author Freddie Forsyth, who brought this dreadful miscarriage of justice to the attention of Jonathan Goldberg QC (who I want defending me if I ever get into trouble), and everyone else - including those newspapers and fellow marines -  who fought to get the soldier released. Well done, all of them.  I want to make just a few points:

Go on, you Deplorables, we can get there! I'm extremely impressed by the way left-wing compassion-mongers always know exactly what Islamic terrorists want. Apparently, "they" want us to secure our borders, instigate rigorous checks on Muslims trying to enter European countries, hunt down would-be or actual jihadists, force Muslims to accept and live by Western values (i.e. tolerance, democracy, and not killing everyone who doesn't agree with you), ban the burqa, cut off the cash supply provided by welfare payments, stop islamist indoctrination in our schools, stop child marriages, punish the systematic sexual abuse of European boys and girls by gangs of rapefugees, and imprison those who condone and carry out female genital mutilation on pre-pubescent girls. Because, you see, if we did all that stuff, it would prove that we're horrible racists, and that would incite the hordes of unemployable, sexually frustrated young Muslim men who hate the West - and whom our governments have invited into our midst - to rise up and destroy the infidel...

The Swedish noir crime TV series "Modus" is terrifying - but for all the wrong reasons

The eight-part Scandi-noir gloomfest Modus, which is mid-way through its Saturday-night run on BBC4, is the most successful Swedish-made series to be shown on Swedish TV for 25 years. I have no idea why - I bailed out after three episodes. It's awful. Not because the directing or the acting are bad (which they are), or because it's too slow (which it is), or because the script is dull and confusing (and how), but because - as I remarked to my wife during the second episode last week - "Aren't there any normal people left in Sweden?" (My language may have been slightly more colourful than that.)

Lots of talk today about cutting the number of peers as well as MPs: I know - what about the "last in, first out" principle!

According to today's Daily Express item, the hate-preacher - who fought tooth and nail for eight long years to stay in the UK before finally being extradited to Jordan in 2013 - now feels that the West is simply too dangerous for Muslims. he told his 58,000 Twitter followers "Muslims living in the West will lose. Sedition and spread of bloodshed will devour them."

Yesterday, an acquaintance of mine (a hard-headed businessman, and not - as far as I can tell - in the least left-wing) tweeted the following:

I'm not sure which set of "haters" my chum (a thoroughly likeable and sensible man) was referring to. I'm sure there are people out there who object to someone - anyone - called Mohammed representing Great Britain at the Olympics. For all I know, there might even be some who won't be cheering on Britain's two female heptathletes - both of whom are mixed-race - today. But I suspect they represent the tiny minority of Britons who are outright racists - there are probably fewer of them here than in any other western country (Third World countries, of course, tend to be fantastically racist).

Please, please, please - would everyone dealing with the threat of Islamic terrorism just read Eric Hoffer's "The True Believer"?

"How could anyone do something like that?" (or some variant thereof) has probably been the most-asked question in Western countries during the past few weeks, as one ghastly, barbaric Islamist atrocity has followed another with bewildering rapidity. One convincing answer was provided by an autodidact San Francisco stevedore called Eric Hoffer 65 years ago in his book, The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, in which (among other things) he described the psychology of the typical follower of significant religious, nationalist and political movements in their various phases throughout the ages. I've written about Hoffer before (here), but I make no apology for doing so again. I read The True Believer for the third time last night, and I can confirm that almost every word of it seems eerily prescient. Here, for instance, is Hoffer's answer to "How could anyone do something like that?":

If you're an Anglican or a Catholic, you'll have heard the leader of your church encouraging you to take in a family of Syrian refugees. This will have resulted in a lot of soul-searching, as the reaction of most Anglicans and Catholics to the suggestion was undoubtedly, "Are you out of your freakin' mind, Your Holiness?" Being Christians, we then no doubt all felt jolly guilty about our lack of caritas (well, I didn't, but I'm not a very good Christian). The problem is that Christianity is a religion of inclusion, of universality - it welcomes everyone, even (or especially) sinners. It's a religion which offers comfort to outcasts, the despised, the friendless, the wretched of the earth: in marketing terms, that's its USP - extending the warm hand of friendship and lovingkindness to distressed immigrants fleeing a war-torn land is pretty near the top of its To Do list. But, as Ed West points out in his excellent Lapidomedia article, "Is Christianity killing Europe?", extending the warm hand of friendship willy-nilly to vast numbers of Muslim refugees (not to mention hordes of economic migrants) is proving to be a suicidal act of "pathological altruism".

Gee, I hope they catch the German racist responsible for this poor Syrian's death!
