There's a very simple solution to this moral conundrum, compassion-mongers

And the solution is: You volunteer to pay more tax than you've been asked to pay - go ahead, be our guest, give as much as you want! The government can hand over your wildly generous excess contribution to those thousand lazy bums, while my tax money can be directed towards the single poverty-stricken family you mention. That way, you get to fund the sort of feckless, criminal cheats who make me vomit, while I get to fund people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in genuine, desperate need.  I won't end up feeling I've been scammed, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that - for once - you've actually put your own money, as opposed to other people's, where your big, fat, sanctimonious mouth is.

Simples!

  1. When I see these sorts of sentiments expressed I can't help but wonder how much first hand experience these people have with the dependent crowd. My mother's side of the family has made a career out of working benefits.

Really I don't blame them so much...they're just working the angles that are readily available to them because of chumps like these.

    1. I couldn't agree with you more. Along those lines, I've written a Part II to this post (see above) in which I lay the blame squarely at the feet of self-serving "enlightened" left-liberals whose compassion strikes me as almost entirely malign. I assume the process is further along here in the UK than in your neck of the woods, but it looks like you're catching up fast under Obama.

  2. I would argue that Singapore, despite its vast Sovereign Wealth Fund, is eminently sensible in its policy of zero unemployment benefits.

Then again, Singapore has no natural resources which means that the Wealth Fund has been created by its tax - paying residents.

    1. Interesting - I had no idea. It's odd how little attention our supposedly internationalist left-liberals seem to pay to how things are handled in countries outside the EU. Smacks of racism!
