Given what's happening in Venezuela, an apology from these malignant Hollywood morons would be nice

Apart from a thug government now led by Chavez's former deputy president, Nicolas Maduro, imprisoning people without trial, killing protesters and destroying media outlets  that won't toe the party line, here is what their centrally-planned socialist economy looks like in practice ((not that any non-leftist will need reminding):

Why can't left-wingers - many of whom are extraordinarily intelligent, civilised and well-educated - understand that this is what the political philosophy they espouse inevitably leads to when pursued to its logical conclusion?

  1. Don't hold your breath for an apology - Penn, Stone et al are probably living at the bottom of the sea right now. When I was in Caracas over 30 years ago, a tableau unfolded on a filling-station forecourt that prompted me to predict that it might take 10 years for shit and fan to meet - I was out by 20 years. A construction worker pulled up in a 4 x 4 about the size of a small tank. He jammed the 4 star gun into the filler on auto, lit a fag, and drifted over to the booth to pay (in those days about 6 pence for a full tank). The gun did not have a shut-off, and as he was paying, the fuel fountained back, making a small lake on the concrete apron. The driver looked across idly, with unconcern, picking out something small from a rack, perhaps for a child, and drifting across to the till again, paid for it, and ambled back to the truck, removed the gun, and roared away. It will end in tears I thought - but it has taken a bit longer than I thought!

  2. It would be quite nice if the media (oh, all right then - the BBC) would even report current events in Venezuela.

    1. I'm sure they will once they're figured out exactly how it's George Bush's fault.

  3. Don't forget that in the autumn of 2013 Venezuela ran out of bog-roll [the regime was forced to buy a large toilet paper factory to ensure minimum supplies]. At the same time they ran dangerously low on newsprint.

    1. But you do understand that that shortage was caused by selfish middle-class bog-roll hoarders and unscrupulous, exploitative shopkeepers rather than the inherent inefficiency of centrally-planned socialist economies?
