CNN thinks proposals to suspend US elections is a "novel" idea

There’s a fascinating little story running in the States at the moment. The Democrat Governor for North Carolina, Beverly  Perdue – not, evidently, the sharpest saw in the garden shed was recetly recorded making a bizarre statement to a Rotary Club audience:

"I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover... I really hope that someone can agree with me on that. You want people who don't worry about the next election."

Well, first, yes, we do want decisions to be taken by people who have to worry about the next election, actually. Fear of the voter is about the only thing that’s keeping US Democrat spending junkies in check. Given that the Obama administration’s handling of the economy to date has been so inept that  China now basically owns America, and the world is on the verge of plunging into a Depression that will make the 1930s version look like a mere blip in comparison, the idea that Barry and his cronies would be allowed to deliver even more of the same poisonous Keynesian medicine is frankly terrifying!

Her people now claim Ms Perdue was joking. Have a listen to the recording and see if it sounds like she’s reeling off  snappy one-liners designed to reduce her audience to helpless laughter.

Okay, I hear you say, let’s not go completely overboard here (for the sound of someone going completely overboard, just listen to Rush Limbaugh in full spate). After all,  like all of us, politicians sometimes suffer a disconnect between what’s going on in their brains and what comes out of their mouths.

But what’s scary about these remarks is that I’m not sure there was anydisconnect between Bev’s  thoughts and words. Obama’s Democrats have openly cast longing glances across the Atlantic at the way European politicians are able to ignore the wishes of the poor sods who voted them into power. Just last week, German MPs treated the German people with shocking,  “Daddy knows best” arrogance by voting to spend yet more of their taxes on bailing out a useless basket-case of a southern European country just in order to keep the flat-lining Euro alive for an extra month or two. German voters have made it very clear that they don’t want the money they’ve earned (by working very hard and being extremely efficient) to be squandered on a bunch of workshy lead-swingers who evidently couldn’t organise a piss-up in a retsina factory. But German MPs – as gutless and conscienceless as our own – decided to treat voters like a bunch of silly children for whom the issues to be decided were simply too complex

Let’s face it,  America’s Democrat politicians  - faced with electoral meltdown next year if only the Republicans can come up with a vaguely credible candidate – would just love to be allowed to complete the job of flushing America down the toilet without having to bother asking voters if that’s okay with them.

If Bev Perdue was the only Democrat voicing anti-democratic sentiments, we might be able to dismiss her as a lone dingbat who really needs to up her meds. But, in this excellent article about the affair, David N. Bass quotes from an essay by Peter Orzsag, Obama’s former director of Office of Management and Budget: "To solve the serious problems facing our country, we need to minimize the harm from legislative inertia by relying more on automatic policies and depoliticized commissions for certain policy decisions. In other words, radical as it sounds, we need to counter the gridlock of our political institutions by making them a bit less democratic."

Exactly! I mean, what did democracy ever do for America? Apart from making it the free-est and richest and most powerful country in the world for over a century. Better ditch it fast! Far better to hand responsibility for everything over to a bunch of unelected, left-wing “experts”.

Oddly, the most shocking element in all – to me at least – was this CNN news anchor’s approach to Bev Perdue’s espowsal of totalitarianism.

A pretty novel idea. Novel? Novel? I wonder just how many people died during the 20th century – and how many found themselves living in terror as slaves – because politicians thought that suspending elections was a “pretty novel idea’.

And I wonder how this smarmy liberal wanker would have reacted if a Republican Governor had been stupid enough to say something quite this dumb, and quite this wicked.

Or maybe he was  just joking too. Yeah! Right!

  1. novel ... nouvel ... new ... new world ...

In his world-famous in his own household paper on the use of the "new world" strategy, http://dematerialisedid.com/BCSL/New.html , someone points out that the purveyors of this nonsense must believe that history begins today and we were all born yesterday.

Why do the likes of Governor Perdue and CNN believe so readily that we are all living in a new world? Do they find the old world, the real world, the world in which we continue to live, too difficult to understand? Do they dislike their fellow man? Or themselves? So much that they wish they and everything else could be different? Is it a childish belief in magic? With one bound they were free?

  2. I like the article you link to very much, DM. Spot on. What’s odd about our new-found determination to treat every set of circumstances we confront as entirely unique and novel is that you’d think the natural human response would be to find similar instances in the past so that you could examine what they did back then and learn from it. But no, the current preference is to ignore the past completely and instead take an almighty punt based on no evidence whatsoever and keep your fingers crossed. It’s very teenagery – “You don’t understand – it’s not like it was in your day!” Politicians, in particular, are always thrilled by the thought that they are facing challenges the like of which have never been faced by anyone ever in the whole of human history. It allows them the giddy prospect of ripping up the rulebook and doing whatever they want to us in order to put it right.

Gordon Brown espousing liberty – Barack Obama espousing the private enterprise system – David Cameron espousing conservatism… they all sound like Stalin espousing democracy.
