Stephen Fry says he and his partner are ready to "tie the knot"

Does anybody know what "tie the knot" is a euphemism for?

  1. forget the euphemism.
    It's a most disturbing photograph.

    1. ...but surely a hostage to nothing more sinister than true love!
I highly recommend readers catch up with the latest stage of Mr. Bartlam's current road trip through the sort of dire weather I haven't encountered since I last motored across the Deep South -

    2. Can true love exist where there is such disparity of mind and experience?

  3. looking again at that photograph, I am even more alarmed. Should that poor boy not be studying for his A levels? Do you think his mother knows he is out (no cheap pun intended)?
And the tidal wave of luvvie accolades awaits us and the prospect of Mr and Mr Fry selling their wedding and honeymoon stories to Hello Magazine is a joy in prospect.
Bring Prince Andrew back to the headlines....

    1. But if he's studying for his A levels at 27, there must be something wrong with him! (No, honestly - 27.)

  4. Thank you, Scott, for the lowcotton. blogspot link.

For those interested in Deep South affairs here's a fine article :

    1. Fascinating.

Maybe the Atlantic and Salon can come down and figure out where all the white people live in Mississippi. We seemed to have ravaged every corner of the state by fleeing.

    2. "The majority of white residents fled town without making amends or doing anything to reverse the decades of economic oppression. For that reason, Tchula, unlike Philadelphia, must rely heavily on outside assistance."

So, if there aren't enough whites, a town automatically needs "outside" assistance? Because - what - black people are incapable of building businesses? Isn't that ever so slightly, you know, racist? Simplistic? Defeatist?

Anyway, Erik - do you ever get the feeling that you're always going to end up on thed wrong side of this argument, whatever the hell you do?

    3. Yes.

If you really want to know what has "ravaged" The Delta...Federal "assistance" would be a good place to start. Furthermore, any discussion of race issues in The South needs to start with the actual ravaging on The Delta and the wider South, at the behest of the Atlantic's intellectual heirs.

    4. Not the intellectual heirs...but, forefathers.

  5. I would imagine that Fry's Rubenesque ego might be slightly assuaged by his quasi - catamite's "dear - caught - in - headlights" pose.

  6. The Atlantic magazine's forefathers were, of course, Abolitionists; so the etiology of The South's decline may be traced to the War of Northern Aggression.

  7. I mean White Racial Decline, the meta cause of which is the USA's liberal democracy. It was liberal democracy that mangled Norman Rockwell's vision of America and served up that of Barack Obama.

    1. I have to say my concern is for Southerners in general and not so much for the white race. After all, it was whites who invaded, brutalized The South...who turned hostile racism from something déclassé, a lower class vice...into a political force with their occupation.

I don't really have an opinion on Rockwell's vision...a little saccharine maybe.

Any way, I'm happy to report that despite our many problems and flaws...we're in pretty good shape...for the shape we're in.

  8. It is sometimes forgotten that Jim Crow was born in the North and only moved South years later.

Resegregation , in education at least, seems to be making a comeback though .

  9. As a child, I always enjoyed those Sunday evenings after Choral Evensong when we sat in front of the fire to toast muffins, covered them with lashings of butter and yummy raspberry jam and settled down in front of the TV to watch Dr Finlay's Racebook on the sofa with daddy and mummy and Muffin, our Cocker spaniel.

"Ooh Doctor Cameron, there be some serious White Racial Declining in the streets today, the noo!" said Janet. "And I dinnae ken wha' te do!"

"Weeel Janet" I think we might need a reet heavy dose o' Dr Colin G.Finlay's White Patent Inhaler te knock oot the effect of all this multiculural miscegenation, the noo. Will ye fetch ma bag?"

"Aye I shall. But to be sure, only your Intravenous Eugenic Drip will do the trick to turn back the regrettable tide of diminution of the nation's life blood, would ye no agree, Doctor?"

"Aye,Janet. The operation is done and so put the kettle on. And will ye fetch ma Resegration-ometer to see that the medicine is taking effect, the noo ?".

"Aye. All the signs are pointing reet, Doctor. Hark! Is that Dr Finlay I hear on his way back from the rally.?"

"Aye Janet. Let us hide in the medicine cupboard til he is gone."

"Ooh Doctor Cameron. After all this time!"

  10. That was quite amusing and certainly miles better than gaining a full understanding of Mr Ray Sissum through experiencing a punctured tyre in Ferguson, Missouri.

  11. There was really no need to go to the trouble of providing a dilution of an AP Herbert parody as, around the same time as AJ Cronin's TV doctor series, there was an actual, scary, for - real Scottish racist in the televised form of this gentleman .

  12. Now that I come to think of it, I haven't invoked the name of Mr Ray Sissum (come on, old APH would have liked it) since I commented regularly on a Scottish blog, as 'Wintermute' here :
