Having summed up Mrs May's wretched performance as "No fun. No verve. No imagination..." Letts ended his piece with this stirring call to arms:

I'm extremely impressed by the way left-wing compassion-mongers always know exactly what Islamic terrorists want. Apparently, "they" want us to secure our borders, instigate rigorous checks on Muslims trying to enter European countries, hunt down would-be or actual jihadists, force Muslims to accept and live by Western values (i.e. tolerance, democracy, and not killing everyone who doesn't agree with you), ban the burqa, cut off the cash supply provided by welfare payments, stop islamist indoctrination in our schools, stop child marriages, punish the systematic sexual abuse of European boys and girls by gangs of rapefugees, and imprison those who condone and carry out female genital mutilation on pre-pubescent girls. Because, you see, if we did all that stuff, it would prove that we're horrible racists, and that would incite the hordes of unemployable, sexually frustrated young Muslim men who hate the West - and whom our governments have invited into our midst - to rise up and destroy the infidel...

Yesterday, an acquaintance of mine (a hard-headed businessman, and not - as far as I can tell - in the least left-wing) tweeted the following:

"To all the haters - a young English-born man of Moroccan descent called Mohammed Sbihi won rowing gold as part of our coxless four"

I'm not sure which set of "haters" my chum (a thoroughly likeable and sensible man) was referring to. I'm sure there are people out there who object to someone - anyone - called Mohammed representing Great Britain at the Olympics. For all I know, there might even be some who won't be cheering on Britain's two female heptathletes - both of whom are mixed-race - today. But I suspect they represent the tiny minority of Britons who are outright racists - there are probably fewer of them here than in any other western country (Third World countries, of course, tend to be fantastically racist).

Denial might not be a river in Egypt - but it does seem to run like a river through mainstream Islam. I was watching coverage of the slaughter of 50 gay Orlando nightclubbers on Fox News a little earlier (they were discussing Trump's proposal to halt Muslim immigration, while agreeing that that wouldn't have prevented what happened in Florida) when they cut to one of their unbearably endless station ident sequences. So I switched over to the BBC, where everyone was jolly upset that unofficial Leave campaigners had posted a tweet suggesting that the Orlando outrage could happen here if we stay in the EU (the moral preeners seemed to have forgotten about the Bataclan and Charlie Hebdo attacks, despite no doubt bravely posting jesusiswhatever messages on social media in their immediate aftermath). Then it was time for a live interview with someone in Orlando. I was expecting some sort of reporter update - but no, a Muslim in Muslim garb representing a Muslim organisation appeared on screen. I groaned.

So, farewell then, Denis Healey. Not my favourite politician, but at least he reduced the deficit and got public spending under control as chancellor when Britain was the “sick man of Europe” - albeit after the IMF had gone medieval on his ass. But I’ve never forgotten his disgusting attack on Mrs. Thatcher for supposedly “wrapping herself in the Union Jack” and “glorying in slaughter” after British Marines had retaken South Georgia. Looking back, he was probably suffering severe psychological stress at the time, given that, although he was a confirmed Trans-Atlanticist and a keen proponent of Britain retaining its nuclear weapons, he had somehow ended up as deputy leader of a party that hated America and was determined to leave this country undefended against the threat of a Soviet attack. Can’t have been comfortable.

Is this all the fault of Islam? The definitive answer is…

Yes and no. Of course, most terrorist attacks these days have something to do with Islam. The people who carry them out are invariably Muslims, they tend to scream “Allahu Akhbar” before demonstrating the infinitely merciful and compassionate nature of the deity they profess to worship, and they make it very clear that they're killing in order to avenge the deaths of Muslim “brothers” or to avenge an insult to Mohammed (whom I promise never again to refer to as The Prophet, because he’s not my prophet) or to terrify us all into submitting to shariah law - or whatever particular “cause” they’ve chosen to justify bringing yet more needless misery and suffering into the world. And of course most of the funding for terrorism these days comes from rich Muslims in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia, Quatar and Kuwait. All sound suspiciously Islamy to me.

Ever since Islamic State released the video of the American journalist James Foley being murdered by an Islamist gangsta thug with a standard London multiculti accent, the 24 Hour news channels have been dragging Muslim spokesmen and women into their studios to offer them an opportunity to distance their communities from the horrors evidently being perpetrated by their fellow countrymen and co-religionists abroad. There was a Yazidi woman on the news yesterday talking about how her people were menaced by “Arabs” on all sides. Until that point I’d rather assumed the Yazidis were Arabs, despite the fact that many of them look anything but. This reminded me of a suggestion I read the other day that Israel should offer itself as a new homeland for Yadidis currently being persecuted by barbarous Islamists in iraq  - a foretaste of what the barbarous Islamists currently penned up in Gaza would do to their Jewish neighbours, given half a chance. (One writer this week defined “Yazidi” as Kurdish for “unarmed Israeli”.) Why not include all persecuted Christians in the offer?

Before the the bodies of three abducted Israeli teenagers were discovered earlier this week - and before a Palestinian teenager was killed in what appears to be a revenge attack - Alan Johnson published an article in the Telegraph (here) which brilliantly pinpointed the bizarre double standards applied by the liberal left to the behaviour of Palestinians and Israelis. The article was written in response to a flood of gloating online comments by Palestinians and their supporters in the wake of the kidnappings. Johnson's basic point is summed up in the title of his piece, "It's time to stop infantlising the Palestinians", while the heart of his argument is to be found in the following paragraphs:

Scarlett Johansson doesn’t mean that much to me, probably because she tends to appear in the sort of film I don’t watch (the last one I can remember seeing her in was Lost in Translation ten years ago, which nearly bored me insensible). I’ve seen her in tons of TV and magazine adverts for "luxury" brands over the years, but I wasn’t aware of her role as an ambassador for Oxfam until I read today that she had given up her role with the charity after eight years because of her connection with the Israeli company SodaStream.

One problem with being anti-Israeli/pro-Palestinian must be the kind of company you find yourself keeping. Apart from Islamofascist terrorists, a selection of Middle East tyrants, anti-Semites from the far left and the far right, you find yourself in the same boat as some of the most nauseating left-wing British journalists, academics, politicians, “comedians” and artists of our benighted era.
