I knew I was getting a cake for my 64th birthday - but this was a wonderful surprise!

My wife made it yesterday, and I was instructed to announce my presence before entering the room at any time during the afternoon. As a result, I didn't have a clue what the theme was going to be...

...but at least it proves my wife does read my blog (here's my recent posting about Black Mask covers - you'll find the one this is based on there).

In case it looks a bit two-dimensional to be a cake, this shot is more convincing:
...or this one:
Like many of the recipients of Mrs. S's cakes, I'm so delighted by it, I can't bring myself to cut into it. So I'll have to content myself with gazing upon it, reading the replica issue of the second edition of Black Mask (originally published in 1920) I also received, guzzling all the fabulous Norwegian food (including my favourites - Gjeitost and Kaviar) my son gave me (and he's on a special diet, so he can't even share in the feast), and watching the wide selection of DVDs my brother sent.

We spent the afternoon watching one of my favourite Sunday afternoon films, Voyage of the Dawn Treader (which just happened to be on TV) en famille, followed by the first episode of the utterly wonderful Planet Earth II, and then a walk round the block on this beautiful, chilly autumn evening - and Andy Murray has just won the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time, defeating Novak Djokovic and ensuring he ends 2016 as World No. 1. Thanks for the p-resent, Andy.

What an absolutely perfect birthday - and I've still got my hair, and there's absolutely no sign of Vera, Chuck or Dave. Deo Gratias.

  1. Many happies, Scott, and when you decide to cut the cake may I have a slice? Your wife is a wonder - at 78 I have given up baking entirely and can barely raise any enthusiasm to cook. Thank heavens for good pub lunches.

    1. My wife separated the decorated top layer from the rest of the cake, which turns out to be an obscenely delicious moist chocolate fudge with Mocha drizzle. Of course you may have a slice - but the chances of it lasting much beyond tomorrow lunchtime are slim - unlike me, unless I can stop gorging myself on it.

    1. Thanks from Mrs. G, GCooper - and you'll be relieved to hear that I've been practicing being retired for years, and am now as match-fit as Andy Murray.
