Kids from around the world with their most prized possessions

The little lady with the big collection of sunglasses is from Zambia. You can find this picture and another 29 funny, poignant, charming, thought-provoking photographs from around the world here, at the Ned Hardy website.

Here's a few more to pique your curiosity:

Just in case you suspect all the boys will turn out to be homicidal maniacs, I'll finish with this one from Iceland (vet or lorry-driver, I reckon):

I've been wracking my brains to remember what my favourite things were at that sort of age, when I would have been in Norway, but I can only remember a couple of books - one about little demons who lived in your mouth and attacked your teeth if you didn't brush, and one beautifully illustrated story featuring Chinese kids and ducks, which I was delighted to discover at my Norwegian cousin's house when I visited her a while back. I do remember that my brother had a really nice stamp collection, but I licked them all and stuck them to the wall one memorable afternoon when I should have been taking a nap: they looked lovely, but I'm not sure he's ever really forgiven me.

  1. I do remember the stamp incident. It crops up in my frequent nightmares. It reminds me of the line from "On The Waterfront": "Charlie, Charlie, I could have been a philatelist."
