I certainly hope Steve Heywood is the silliest policeman in Britain

Nine men have been convicted of being part of a child sexual exploitation ring in Greater Manchester. The men, from Rochdale and Oldham, "groomed" girls, one as young as 13. Liverpool Crown Court heard the men plied their victims with drink and drugs so they could "pass them around" and use them for sex.

The case, involving Asian defendants and white victims, sparked protests by far-right groups but police insist the grooming was not "racially motivated"… Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) denied that the ethnicity of either the defendants or the victims was a factor. "It is not a racial issue," he said. "This is about adults preying on vulnerable young children… It just happens that in this particular area and time the demographics were that these were Asian men."

Heywood went on to deny that the ethnicity of the Jews who died in the Holocaust was a factor in their demise. “Could have happened to anyone. Wrong place, wrong time, that’s all.”

The Assistant Chief Constable added that the recent widespread murder of Christians in Muslim countries had nothing whatsoever to do with religion. “It’s purely a coincidence that people who attend churches as opposed to mosques or ashrams were attacked. Luck of the draw, really.”

He also denied that the Crusades had had anything to do with religion. “The Christian/Muslim thing was just by-the-by. Could have been Hindus and Zoroastrians.”

The policeman finished by asserting that the Yorkshire Ripper murders had nothing to do with the gender of the killer or that of his victims. “Could have been a female killing men. That’s just the way it goes.”

I wonder if Assistant Chief Constable Heywood is quite so gloriously, stupidly colour-blind when it comes to so-called “hate” crimes?

  1. Well put. A grave illustration of just how "politicised" out police force has become. The BBC has also taken great care to point out the dangers of dwelling on the "ethnicity" aspect of this loathsome crime [The 6 O'Clock News and the Today programme this morning].

  2. Good old plod. Still back in the post- Macpherson Report era when the first duty of any ambitious ACPO rank was to avoid the institutional racism charge. Public opinion went that way, officer! I also listened to Today. Of course they would invite Vaz to give the editors an affirmation of the BBC's we-are-all-guilty line. But they must have been disappointed when Martin Narey, ex-Barnardos chief, disagreed and made the entirely sensible point that you cannot ignore the race aspect of this particular case out of fear of being tainted by association with those who would exploit it.

Interesting cove, Narey. Started life as a trainee prison governor when it was pretty much a basket case and ended up running it. The prison service is never in the news now, people seem to be securely locked up, don't hop over the walls with the same frequency and the warders don't threaten to strike every 5 minutes. Maybe he should have a go at the NHS.

  3. I hate to disappoint you but ACC isn't even the silliest policeman in Greater Manchester, never mind Britain. Have a look at the deranged rantings of his immediate superior, 'Sir' Peter Fahy and the rest of the ACPO element of GMP. These people are so stupid they are a danger to the people of Manchester.
