For those of you not au fait with America's political colouring coding conventions...

...Republican states are red, Democrat states are blue. In  other words, if the people who create America's wealth and pay ALL its income tax could choose the president, they would vote - overwhelmingly - for a conservative. But when the people who end up receiving all those taxes are included - blow me down! - the country ends up with a left-winger.

As the great Alexis de Tocqueville put it:
... a democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.
And again:
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money. 
As we wait to discover just how big Hillary Clinton's majority is, I'll leave you with another de Toqueville quote, from his 1835 work, Democracy in America:
“I do not know if the people of the United States would vote for superior men if they ran for office, but there can be no doubt that such men do not run.” 
Or women, for that matter.
