  1. Depending how one views the statistics,some lists have Memphis TN followed by Oakland CA below Detroit and above New Orleans.

    1. The changing demographics for the cities you mention are interesting - and possibly instructive. I wonder if the Democratic Party politicians who run them all are proud of themselves.

    The American cities on your list,plus about twenty more I visited between 1978-81 certainly had a palpable 'edge' to them.

  3. St Louis had such an "edge" I decided to give it a miss and hopped on the next Greyhound out about ten minutes after arriving. When I arrived in Los Angeles and phoned my host, who lived in Brentwood, so he could come and pick me up, he gasped, "Downtown? I haven't been there in 20 years!" Looking around, I could see why. I seem to remember San Antonio was civilised - although I might have become desensitised by then.
